READING -- An assistant manager at a McDonald's restaurant was shot in the head Wednesday while working at the drive-through window, and later died at a hospital, officials said.
Shawnee M. Koch, 40, of Reading, was the second person to be shot dead at the drive-through window of the McDonald's restaurant at Ninth and Spring streets. In 2004, a customer was killed there. Police did not immediately identify any suspects or motive for Wednesday's shooting, police Sgt. Guy S. Lehman said.
"It doesn't appear there was any dialogue between the two," Lehman said. "She was standing at the cash register, the car pulled up and 'bam.'"
Koch was shot at about 3:30 a.m. and died Wednesday evening at Reading Hospital. The dine-in area of the restaurant was closed at the time of the shooting; the drive-through is open 24 hours a day.
In the Oct. 14, 2004, slaying, Jason Stief, 20, of Reading was surrounded by five men and shot repeatedly as he waited at the same drive-through. Police said after that slaying that they believed Stief was targeted because he had given a statement to police that helped them arrest a suspect in the shooting death of his neighbor 11 days earlier.
