RENO, Nev. (AP) — A teen has been convicted of murder in the drive-by shooting death of a 16-year-old boy in the parking lot of a Reno McDonald’s.

The Washoe District Court jury found the 17-year-old guilty of second-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon on Wednesday.

The boy’s older brother testified against him in the case. The brothers were charged after Michael Vega was killed Aug. 26 in the fast-food restaurant parking lot. Vega died after being taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center by friends.

Sentencing in the case is set for May 20.

RENO, NV – Life in prison… that is the sentence for a man convicted of a murder outside a Reno McDonald’s.
19-year-old Luis Cardenas was convicted of second degree murder in July…and has now been sentenced in Washoe District Court to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

In August of last year, Cardenas and his brother Antonio shot and killed 16-year-old Michael Vega in the parking lot of the McDonald’s restaurant at Silverada and Oddie in Reno.

The pair used a Chinese-made assault rifle to murder the unarmed teen, a fact Judge Patrick Flanagan cited when handing down his sentence.

Antonio Cardenas was convicted at a trial in March.
