Sunday morning March 29, 2009, at approximately 4:20am, Leon County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Wilkinson was on patrol in the area of Airport Drive and Eppes Street when he heard the sound of gun shots in the area of Lake Bradford Road. As Deputy Wilkinson checked the area he observed a large panicked crowd of approximately 150 people fleeing the parking lot of the McDonalds\Circle K located at 811 Lake Bradford. Deputy Wilkinson discovered that one male victim had been shot and was dead in the front parking lot. Additional Deputies and Officers with the Tallahassee Police Department quickly responded to the scene and immediately began an investigation. The deceased was identified as Curtis Brown, 26yoa.

Since the shooting, Leon County Sheriff’s Office Detectives have been reviewing surveillance video from the McDonald’s/Circle K and have been using this evidence to identify possible suspects. While reviewing the surveillance video from the time of the shooting Detectives observed a subject in the area of the gas pumps firing a handgun in the direction of the store. Based on the video evidence and witness statements Detectives were able to identify the subject as Darvauta Vaughn.

Last week Vaughn was questioned at the Sheriff’s Office and was confronted with the store video of him shooting a firearm during this incident. At the time Vaughn was arrested and was charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. After a thorough review of the available evidence, Vaughn is now also charged with the Felony Murder of Curtis Brown, Firing a Weapon into a Building and Discharging a Firearm in Public.
