On November 5th, 2011, State Department Special Agent Christopher Deedy and his friend stopped at a McDonald’s in Honolulu, Hawaii for a late-night meal. During their visit, Christopher and his friend intervened in an altercation between other patrons, and he drew his firearm. Instead of backing down, Kollin Elderts, 23, came towards Deedy and was shot once in the chest. Elderts later died from the gunshot wound.

Deedy was charged with Murder in the Second Degree and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Separate Felony, which carries a possible life sentence. While the jury was unable to reach a verdict in his first trial, he was later found Not Guilty degree murder during a retrial in August of 2014.
